All That Glitters Is Not Gold

Written and directed by Alexis

I never really felt like I fit in for a long time. I took me being different and turned it into a positive. I just had to show everyone how fabulous I am. I want people to know that you can do anything. - Alexis

In Alexis’s inspiring story, she uses the power of positive thinking to inspire herself and advocate for policy changes affecting foster youth across California. “All That Glitters Is Not Gold” is one of the films in the Youth Voices Video Project, a collection of foster youth-produced films from PBS SoCal’s To Foster Change.

Born into a mixed-race family, Alexis never felt like she belonged. Her younger brother and sister were adopted out of foster care, leaving Alexis with little family connection. Despite that, Alexis continues to push herself to succeed academically. Today, she is working towards two Associate of Arts degrees from Los Angeles Valley College. In addition to her studies, Alexis also works at the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services and volunteers as an advocate with California Youth Connection.
