The Youth Voices Video Project

Behind The Scenes, produced by Jason Daley Kennedy

I want people to see this as a way to lend a hand to the foster care community, get involved, and see them for the amazing people they are and not just for being in the foster care system. – Hope Perello

To Foster Change created the Youth Voices Video Project to let foster youth tell their own stories. In August 2017, the project team selected former foster youth from across Los Angeles to attend an intensive video production boot camp. Each budding filmmaker captured his or her own life on camera with guidance from the team. Youth Voices producer Margo Newman, professional filmmakers Hope Perello, Molly Hansen, Kimberly Bautista, Mobolaji Olambiwonnu, and film editor Jaime Ryan Heintz worked with these first-time filmmakers to help them envision and craft their films—but it was ultimately the students themselves who made all creative decisions. Little did these filmmakers know how empowering and life-changing the experience would be. They learned the skills necessary for a career in Los Angeles’ massive creative industry, while creating an inspiring short film about their lives. In the end, a surprise: they got to keep the DSLR camera they used to make their films. Watch this behind-the-scenes peek at the first-ever Youth Voices Video Project.
