For Fatima, foster care wasn’t a negative experience; in fact, it saved her. In this piece, Fatima shares how foster care helped her continue her education even as a young, single mom. She was able to get much needed therapy and realize her full potential. Fatima’s film is part of the Youth Voices Video Project, a collection of foster youth-produced films from PBS SoCal’s To Foster Change.
Fatima entered the foster care system at the age of 15 and aged out at the age of 21. Since leaving her foster home at the age of 18, she has encountered many obstacles. Fatima is now a full-time student at Cal State Fullerton, a full time intern at the Norwalk Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, and a single mother of two beautiful children. She is majoring in Human Services with a concentration in Mental Health and a minor in Psychology. Fatima hopes to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and work with foster youth, young mothers, and minority groups.
