Not Your Statistic

Written and directed by Shari

Statistics have tried to define my life. This project has fostered in me a desire and a true passion to change my advocacy to activism. - Shari

In this powerfully compelling spoken word piece, Shari partners with her long time mentor, composer Karrie Benoit Morales, to dispel the stereotypes that people hold about foster youth. An educated and passionate advocate for all foster youth, Shari proudly shares a recent milestone moment in her life where she helped change federal policy in California. Not Your Statistic is one of the films in the Youth Voices Video Project, a collection of foster youth-produced films from To Foster Change.

Shari is a former foster youth who entered foster care at age 14. Beating the odds of the 97% of foster youth who don’t finish college, Shari graduated from California State University Northridge. During college, she worked for the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services. Today, Shari is pursuing her Master’s degree in social work at the University of Southern California, and continues to be a champion of social justice.
